Unhappy Tranny goes bad once again!!

I'm getting tired of sinking all kinds of money in this car. It seems like these cars don't hold togethor for nothing. I don't even beat on my car like other people beat on theirs and mine is the one that breaks. I just had this tranny rebuilt about 5K miles ago and already it's shot. I've only had the car for about a year and so far I had the engine rebuilt once and the tranny also rebuilt once, so far. It's getting rediculous. I have a lot of thinking to do before I make a decision on what i'm gonna do. I'm even contemplating selling the car for a friggin import, at least I know that I won't have to worry about the trans going on me every time I go out!

relax buddy.....i almost gave up hope once too when my tranny blew up...i think you should blame the shop that rebuild it.....dont you have warranty or something?? i got mine rebuild around 5K too, but i got 1 year unlimited mile warranty, so i'm not that worry....other than that, keep the Z man......imports are cool, but where's the power??

Interesting............ did you install a transcooler with the new rebuild or not?? Heat IS the #1 cause of transmission failure! Like the previous guy wrote. Hassle the person/bussiness that did your rebuild. I had a cousin have to constantly nag the shop that rebuild his tranny ----and he finally made them give in. If they give you the run-a-round about using the car for racing----don't let them do so.

Well the only thing that sucks is that I had my cousin rebuild it for me for nothing but the cost of parts so I don't know whats gonna happen. I love the car but it is a big money hole right now. As far as the imports go, I know they don't have power and maybe that's a good thing for me anyway. I doubt I'll go down that road but you never know.

Hey bud,

That is the same way I was. Right now I have 4 camaros, 2 '90 Irocs and 2 4th gen --94---95 Z's. I've already had 7 camaros with the 4 I have right now. Anyway, I did buy a Honda Accord for (gas saving ) purposes. I drive 50 miles round trip to work and my gas guzzlers don't help with the current crisis. I don't plan to add anything to the car to make it go faster----just routine maintenance products that it may need.----Laters.

Ohh, and once again..........pay cheap now, pay $$$$ later!!

-Not insulting you---but, I've been through this a couple of times, so when something big needs to be done to my cars, I'll pony up the extra $ to get it right and have someone to yell @ in case something goes wrong. ---good luck on the fix!

Once again, the first transmission lasted how long? The second one broke almost overnight? How many times have I heard this story and heard the owner bemoan the quality of GM's transmissions. Please, save us the sob story and don't include GM in the equation if they didn't put the transmission together. Sounds like your cousin needs to take some freshening courses on transmission repair. Or maybe he needs to buy his materials from a reputable source instead of "ACME transmission parts Inc.". If he rebuilt your Honda or Toyota trans how long would it last?

I don't know if it means anything but the guy at AAMCO said that it had a purple tint to the tranny fluid which he say comes from the torque converter. I watched my cousin rebuild the tranny and I think that he did a good job on it. I wonder if it could have been from a faulty torque converter.

Atlasengr is all over it. Check your cooler. It is the single most common reason for a failure after a rebuild. When a trans has a failure, the debris that gets into the oil flows through the cooler and can plug it. When this happens, your lube oil gets restricted and damages parts quickly. GM will not pay a tech. for a trans. rebuild unless he flushes the cooler. They have a new machine that tests the cooler flow and gives an (authorization) number that must be submitted with the claim. It's that important. To check it, pull the return line from the cooler, at the transmission. Put the line into a gallon container. Have someone start the car and time the flow. You need a minimum or 2.5 qts in 30 seconds for adequate cooling and lube. If you are lower than this you need to check for kinked lines. If your lines are ok then try backflushing with cooler with compressed air and a solvent. Make sure both lines are off of the radiator when doing this. Hope this helps. Good luck.
