Tranny or Clutch problems...PLEASE HELP!!
This is going to be a lil long, but please read it through and try to help me out guys. Thanks so much for reading. Just today my car started acting up real weird. To start off with, my car is a '94 Z with an M6. First, the car started to make a metal grinding noise (sounds like two metal plates rubbing against each other in a rotating motion) which came from under the car near the location of the front of the tranny. That noise would only occur when starting to move in first gear. After the car starts moving, the grinding noise stops and everything is normal. I later had to drive the car 40 miles out to Long Island in stop and go traffic. This time, the problem got worse and worse. The grinding noise starting in first got louder and the car would have a heavy vibration/shake coming from the tranny area. During the drive, I started to notice that I was having to use more force to get into 4th and 5th gears. It only got worse...later I was unable to even get it into 1st and 2nd gear when I came to a complete stop. I would have to keep trying to get it into gear and it would only let me into 3rd gear from a stop at that point. However, it did sometimes let me into 1st without a problem. Also, if I was to start slowing down and then shift into first, it would let me with no problems, but when the car comes to a stop with my foot on the clutch and the car in 1st gear, there would be this horrible whirring noise and the tranny would start to shutter pretty badly and you could feel it througout the car. I seriously have no idea what the problem is and now I'm stuck out here in Long Island at my GF's place. Could it be that I need a new clutch, new tranny mounts, rebuild tranny, or a totally new tranny? BTW, the clutch does not feel like it is slipping. Any help would really be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I kind of have the same problem. I have a new clutch, so I don't think thats it. I think my problem is the throw out bearing. After hard driving, it grinds when I push the clutch in, or anytime the clutch is partially depressed. It doesn't bother me enough to rip the tranny out for a $2 partr though. I think yours sounds a little different though. Good luck.
