Tranny bein goofy
Tranny bein goofy
Hey guys, tranny bein goofy is rather vague, but thats what its doin. '94 Z28 Auto. This is my first auto trans car, so maybe it is bein normal and im just crazy but I dunno. No matter what gear I throw her in she wont get rubber in a straight line from a standstill, be it 1,2,D, or OD. Once it is rolling though it is great, sometimes gets rubber when hittin second. But why do I have such horrible launches and no power to the ground from a standstill? Is it due to the lockup 'verter or is it something simple? Possibly the wide ol' Z rated tires? Let me know what yous think. Thanks!
Gotta add onto that.....Im not just worried about smokin the tires off, im actually concerned with how little power gets to the ground and how my launches seem so...so...blah.........
BTW: Its not a Jet tranny, I had it out the other day and its a refabbed GM Goodwrench trans.

Do the '94s have traction control as a option? Mine doesn't and I can smoke 315/35-17s at will (unless its over 90* -- they get sticky then). Had a '95 Formula Firebird with traction control and it would launch with very little wheel spin (245/50-16 Road Huggers - I didn't buy them). Both were A4s with 2.73 gears in the Z28. Don't remember what gears were in the Formula.
I do have all the trac options, but does that affect the rear power that much, thought it was mostly braking. If Im turning, I can whip the butt out faster than you can say 180. But strait line isnt really much, sometimes I can get it a little light in the rear. Maybe its just conditions who knows. My rubbers are 245/50 Dayton ZR's. I guess its better to take off than to sit there and spin, maybe I should stop complaining before I get harassed lol. Thanks.
The ABS stops the tires from locking up under heavy braking and Traction Control is where the PCM retards timing (?) to limit wheelspin during accelleration. That's how I understand it but I'm no expert so if someone can explain it better, please go for it.
I don't know why you couldn't...I can spin until midway through second gear in mine, if I don't peddle it a little bit. Granted, my tires aren't the best...but I can still do it.
TCS wasn't an option on 94's, btw.

Low Trac Light
Wen your anti-lock system is limiting brake pressure to avoid skidding, the LOW TRAC light will appear on your instrment cluster. If you have (which I do) the traction control system, this light will also come on when the system is lmiting wheel spin.
ASR is also available

I would be interested to hear a straight response from this also. Like the author, this is my first auto and (mabye not like the author)I hate it. Untill I can switch the tranny I am curious why I cant break the tires loose in any gear. Mabye its just hooking up really well, I dont know. I've seen the LOW TRAC light enough times obviously but only when I'm sliding through the snow, never on launch.
I know what it is, its all one big conspiracy.
No seriously it really bugs me, what will cure this? When I mash the pedal from a standstill it has slug syndrome right off the line. Once its goin man that baby slams second and the tires break loose. BUT WHY OH WHY does it not take off like it should? I am absolutely not picking on my Z here, but my 78 F250 Supercab which weighed in at about 5500 pounds or more, has 33" meats and an auto trans with about 200,000 miles on it, seemed to go RIGHT off the line better than my Z. There has got to be something simple that can give this baby an instant adrenaline rush.
BTW- I have never seen my LOW-TRAC light when doing a brake-stand or donuts or whatever, but the manual says that the system reduces engine torque to avoid wheel spin. I HAVE seen it when skidding, what gives?

When skidding, that's your ABS that is causing the LOW TRAC light.
Maybe you need a rebuild. Of course, I'm always quick to blame the 2.73s for any sluggish performance
But you say you're laying a patch in 2nd, (surprising to me) so who knows.
I dont have ASR, but the manual says that Traction control also limits wheel spin. Eh man oh man is this ever confusing? Rebulild had better not be necessary lol the trans has about 7000 miles on it. If it is time, im gonna cry
Okay, yeah.. Traction control is ASR. If you don't have ASR, then something else is up.
I'm not exactly sure what, but your bogging is not occuring because of some kind of traction control. You don't have it.
Maybe you need a tune up?? TC? I guess it could be several things. I have no clue.. But hey, at least you're in the right place.
Someone's bound to know

Nate, I have traction control, I have seen the light several times, but as for ASR I dont think I have, there is no switch nor have I ever seen the light. The book mentions them as 2 different things. You are right though, maybe a tuneup is in the near future, but still why so much power when hitting second but no ***** on take-off? Tranny is refabbed as of about 7000 miles ago as is a new torque converter. I just put in a new flywheel (was broked), serviced the trans replaced all the fluid with Castrol ATF sumtin or other + new filter, plus some high performance additive. Still no diff. I dunno, I guess I'll just have to start with the basics. If that dont work, you bet your butt I will be puttin up mad posts lol. Thanks!
