Tranny bearings and rebuilding t56....anyone do this?

I need new beaing in my transmission. this was due to having no pilot bearing for about 6 months.
well while i am doing that, might as well replace the syncros and shift fork pads.

I have 2 questions:
1 is when i replace the bearing and races in the T56, is there any special clearances or spacing i have to do? Or do you simplly slap on the new bearings?

ANd 2nd is how do you know if you need a new blocker/slider assembly? It is slightly hard to get in to gears, but i am not sure if that is the blocker rings or just something to do with the lose bearings or somethign else.

any help, tips, info is greatly appreciated

Yes. If you change any of the tapered bearings that support the mainshaft, the contershaft or the extension housing you will be required to set the endplay on these pieces. This is accomplished by using shim washers underneath the bearing races in the front adaptor plate. There is also a race inside backside of the input shaft that requires a special tool to remove if you want to change that out as well. The rest of the bearings and races can be removed using conventional methods (press bed and a bearing seperator). The GM manual posted has the detailed instructions on how to do this.

If your pilot bushing/bearing went bad, I would plan on replacing the input shaft. It is probably grooved pretty bad.

Did you have a Pilot bushing or bearing?

I did a motor swap and put an automatic engine in my car. well at 3am i didn't even think about automatic cars not having pilot bearings so it had non at all. it now has a bearing tho. i saw all your threads and replies about the bearings being bad and how to get a bushing....but i talked to several gm store...there are no more bushings in the state of florida for any chev car. my imput shaft is fine
