torque on lugnuts

torque on lugnuts

hey guys, hope this doesnt sound stupid. just got a new compressor and impact wrench. just wanted to check on how much torque to put on lugnuts. dont want to overtighten them. thx for the help.

Don't use an impact wrench on lugnuts. Use a torque wrench if you want to do it right. 100 ft lbs tops. 85-90 is okay.

Unless you bought some of those "torque" sockets I wouldn't use an impact gun to tighten wheel nuts to your wheels. They look like this you can buy as a set:

Those sockets are designed for various torque specs once your wheel nuts are at the torque range that the socket is for you'll feel a major vibration from your impact gun telling you to let go of the trigger.

I would only use an impact to "snug" up the nuts to the wheels with the gun at the lowest setting then use a torque wrench to reach the proper torque figure for the vehicle you're working on.
