Is this a torque converter problem?

i ran into a problem with my car yesterday on the way home from work......i was at a light and it shut off all by itself, i started it back up (started right up) and then it would jump from like 1700 rpm to like 2400 and jerk my neck (like it wasnt accelerating form 1700-2400). Then when coming to a stop it, when it downshifted, the car would spudder and need gas to stay alive. Well again on the way home today, same problems. Last night i did all the plugs and checked all the wires. The opti has no more the 5k miles on it and same with the coil. Could this problem be from the tranny/converter, or maybe even the valvelash needs to be reset (just did it 500 miles ago), mods done are just heads/cam and bolt ons. Stock auto tranny still
thanks guys
