Torque Conv feel...

How is a TC supposed to feel. I was under the impresseion that a higher stall would allow your car to build higher RPM before accelerating. Before I got the TC, I could press the brakes and rev the gas at a stop until about 1500 rpm. The tires would then begin to spin. With a 2500 stall, I thought it would get higher rpm before the tires spin. I even tried just flooring it from a dead stop and it doesn't seem to have any better "take off". Now the mid range RPM is a ton better, but that may be because of the slipping tranny (just had it rebuilt with TC). Thanks for any input,

Kyle

your rear brakes aren't strong enough to hold-

watch it when you launch, it should flash at the stall speed.

high stalls feel like a slipping trans

So if I just punch the gas from the start without trying to rev it up, it should "flash" to about 2500 and then take off? I know it would be hard to see, especially since this all happens fairly quickly, but just want to make sure I understand the mechanics and theory of it. Thanks,

Kyle

If u punch it u will go up in smoke much quicker...when u stall the car up to launch it go's higher rpms without breaking loose, so your right. Hence u launching from a higher rpm, hence the improvement of one .Your not gonna be very happy w/ that 2500 stall thats extremely mild, your gonna want so much more...I had a 2400 and it blew..i wouldnt go any lower then 3000.

I would have gone with the 3000 stall they have but I have heard of some problems with OBD1 and stalls over 2800. As this is my daily driver, I didn't want to go too wild. I haven't really got on it yet so, I will play with it some tonight. I just didn't want to end up like my brother's 92Z. He only had a 2200 stall (built 355 ATI 12# SC) and he couldn't get traction anywher in first or second. I guess if I want more, I can pull the tranny and put in a bigger one. Damn, now I sound like a woman, all concerned about size. lol Thanks,

Kyle

there's no replacement for displacement...whether it's under the hood of your car, or your woman.

I just went from a stock stall (on a dead stock LT1, 3.23 gears, and 160 degree tstat) to a Vigilante 2600 and a rebuilt A4. It's like night and day difference. But I had to make a lot of changes to the computer to get it to feel right. It was shifting out way too early at part and full throttle, the TC wasn't locking up at the right speeds, etc. I documented most of the changes on my web site but still have a few to put up.

Like Trey said, it feels like it's slipping, especially in 3rd and 4th. But on a part throttle take off it will run up to the stall speed and hang there while you go through the gears. I like it now that I corrected the mph when it shifts. I have 17 x 9.5's and before, without brake torqueing it wouldn't turn the tire. Now, I don't think you could launch it more perfect (hey, I know, it's stock). It flashes to 2600 and keeps going. Perfect tire spin to launch with. With different tires that might not be the case. I wish I some some before and after times but I can tell you it feels like considerably more torque now. It definintely is quicker on launches!!!

Thanks for the input Steve. I don't do my own programming, I use PCMforless. I do have freescan but haven't logged anything yet. I plan on taking it to the Dyno with a wideband O2 and logging some runs to send to Bryan. As far as driving it with Freescan, I really don't even know what to look for. Any ideas? By the way, great site.

Thanks. As far as Freescan goes, I'm just learning too. I use MadZ28.com for my tuning and guidance. I've done all my transmission programming so far but I'm still learning that too.

If you want to do some logging, go with datamaster. I'm not sure freescan has a logging feature...I think it justs shows everything real time and that's it. I used datamaster and it worked great. 20 free trials can't go wrong.

I can log just about anything with Freescan. And it's free.
