Okay, so I'm going to get all technical & $hit, but I remember reading back in mid 93, I think Motor Trend or R&T, they did the radar thang, & clocked the 93's @155 in 5th top speed, the 93TA's @154, & the 93Formula's @156...

The reason of the subtle diff's?
Wind resistance, the TA has that larger factory airdam, the Z28 has the open front headlight area & the Formula was the smoothest of the bunch.

Weight plays no factor in top speed, it helps in getting there faster, but drag and power is the determining factor.

Take for instance, the MG Lola's weigh in at around 1300lbs with 540hp, the Audi R8's weigh in at around 2000lbs and 640hp, big power to weight ratio difference, a bit less drag on the MG Lola because of the lower weight and less downforce needed for same cornering forces, yet the R8 runs over 10mph faster down the straights.

Why?

Power!

Same reason a Z28 tops out about 15mph more than an S2000 that weighs 1000lbs less with only 30 less hp.

I saw this thread the other day and decided to get a little dare-devilish. I have 3:73's and about 320 rwhp in an everything else stock T/A. My previous top speed was about 150mph, cuz I would always run out of room. Well, last night I decided to try again on a stretch of 55 at about 3 in the morning. I definitely had the needle pegged to the stopper thing they have on the speedo. It was there for a good 5-10 seconds, which is a long time at those speeds. I guessed probably about 170 mph cuz I watched my rpms climb after the needle stopped. I was at about 6100 rpm's in OD when I let off. It was such a rush. But anyway, I was just saying what is possible with just some mods and a foot that doesnt want to let off.

im sure your motor loved being fed a 150shot in 6th gear.

based on gear ratios, fbodies should be able to go 255 or whatever insane number that is, but they dont, because there is not enough power there to keep pulling in top gear.

also, take a gps along with ya speedos arent real accurate from what i have seen, under acceleration and top speed.

Soemthing is wrong with your calculations. My formula gives me 182mph at 6,100rpm in OD with a 26" tall tire. Probalby need another 200-300rwhp to hit that speed.

ok fine...I was off a bit on the 5th gear ratio...
have you run your car at the track......you should hit 5th before the end of the 1320...

your speedo may show 150mph but thats most likely because you have not change the Pcm and it still thinks you have 3.42s

you can argue with me but your not right......ITS NOT GOING TO GO 150+ WITH THE STOCK TIRE AND 4.10s IN 5TH....no ifs ands or buts about it....a little Over 130 is all that its going to do...

look...my good friend has 4.10s in his M6 97...and he loves them...he just cant go over 133 in 5th with them....he runs out of gear...its simple math...
and the tachs in the camaros are always of by a bit....they have a correction factor that you can watch on a lap top or autotap..so if it said 6,000 ...your most likelt around 5,800

Maybe 6000??? I dont rememeber, I didnt really wanna stare at the instument panel for too long going that fast. I also have 245/45/17 on my car if that makes a difference. What is the gps thing?? Maybe I can use one of those and find out how fast I really was going. I really did have the needle burried for a while though. I'll try it again sometime when I have a more accurate instument.

We can hit 150mph in 5th gear with 4.10's in my brothers 96 Trans Am with 275/40/17 tires.
