Re: TOOLS to use when installing RR's

U can use stock springs with 1.6 RR with no problem it's just when you change you cam is when you need to up grade the springs b/c then it will bind...but if you are just changing RR's then don't worry about it!

Also visit shoebox's webpage for how to change the springs...you need a spring compressor and patience...that's all I can say...just do a search and visit his page...type in his name, it's Shoebox

I changed my springs this past winter, easier than I thought. You will have to get a hand tightening spring compressor so that it can fit underneath the cowl, I picked one up for 10 bucks and you will also need a small powerful magnet to pull the keepers out, very handy. Just make sure the piston is at top dead center, didn't feel like pulling out each spark plug and adding air to the cylinder. Hope this helps.

Yea I am just putting on the 1.6 RR"s we are not changing the cam. What is the max lift of the LT1 spring. I just don't want to messmy motor up binding out springs. I only rev the car to 6 grand

Re: TOOLS to use when installing RR's

it is more then worth it to change the springs esp. with the miles most people have on their LT1s

if you are going with 1.6RR you can get away with LT4 springs (.525 max lift)($35 @ sdpc2000.com)

although if I were you, I would do 1.7 RR, get some isky springs, arp studs, guideplates, I think I totalled it out to around 400 bucks, I plan on doing it next summer, spent my limit on mods this summer

and regardless what you go with change out the valve seals while your in there

Re: TOOLS to use when installing RR's

KD Tools sells a nice screw type spring compressor. It has a removeable handle so you can use a wrench on it. It worked well when I put in LT4 springs.
I wouldn't run stock springs with 1.6 rockers. LT4 springs aren't very expensive and they should be better at high rpms since they are a little bit stiffer than LT1 springs.

Re: TOOLS to use when installing RR's

For what is worth, i did comp cams 1.6 RR on my stock springs (had ~95,000 miles on the car) and ran them like that for over a year, no real problems excpet a little coil bind (with 1,6rr you are only about .002 less then springs max lift). It was reved to 6,000rpm without any problem. I know have LT4 springs and they take it a lot better, the engine was a little "sluggish" with the old springs but not any more. I did my spring swap with the heads off the car so it was nice and easy, if you leave the heads on the car, MAKE SURE TO FILL THE CYLINDER WITH COMPRESSED AIR SO YOU DON"T DROP THE VALVE IN!

It has happened to a frriend of mines 95 trans am and I had to take the head of for him, major PITA.

Re: TOOLS to use when installing RR's

Definitely worth the effort to change out the springs while doing the R.R.s on a higher mileage car. Agree with the LT4 springs for a replacement since no CAM is going in at this time.
You can get a screw type spring compressor for cheaps. Bring each cylinder to TDC and do one at a time..your valves will not fall but maybe 1/4 inch at the most. Good time to change the plugs too, plus with all the plugs out you can turn the motor over by hand to get to TDC. I put a straw in the plug hole and watch it to tell when I am at max TDC.

Re: TOOLS to use when installing RR's

Wich is easier to do the Air to push the valves up or to do the piston one. I really don't want nothing to go wrong. Where can I get the KD tool at. I know alot of people go with the 1.6 RR's but how many people go with the 1.7's (Scorpian brand correct) and wouldn't the LT4 springs work with the 1.7's since the lift would only be around .500 lift. IF I go with either RR's should I replace anything else like pushrods, Lifters, Etc

Going with the air method is a royal pain in the ***. Try getting a compressor fitting into the spark plug hole with stock manifolds. It's also unreliable.

I prefer a large metal object to hold up my pistons, thank you.

You won't need to replace the lifters.

Seriously. I tired that method when I did mine and I gave up after the #1 plug.....and that looked like it was the easiest of them all! (SLP single cats) I'm sure if you're doing headers at the same time that would work well. I used the piston method, it worked fine.

Re: TOOLS to use when installing RR's

Well I have Jet hot LT's and a BMR k-member already (looking to be one of the fastest LT1's with just bolt-ons) So the piston way is alot easier. Does anyone have a Tutorial on doing this. It seems alot easier than the other, also were are you guys buying this Spring compressor tool. Thanks for the info.
BTW Ramair95Ta did you give up with the pursue of the bolt-ons. My car is very similiar to how yours was. Thanks for any info fella's.
