took apart my old opti

i decided to take a look at my old opti. so below are the pictures. i did notice three out of the ordinary things.

First it looks like one of the metal points looked weird:

Second the rotor was cracked:

Third there was some gunk or oil like substance on the rotor side cap as well as some discoloration on the other cap:

Are these trouble signs? Currently I have an MSD unit on the car and I'm tempted to open it up as well. Any thoughts?

that's called carbon tracking so the cap is shot IMO. The first picture also shows that the rotor is scraping the cap. The rotor is shot IMO. Time to replace cap & rotor.

well this is the old one. i have the msd unit on the car now but i think it may be giving me some problems as well. the car doesn't break up, backfire, sputter or anything but for the mods the performance is really sub par. i'm concerned that the car may be doing this to any opti i put on it.

I would install a new gm opti with a msd cap and rotor. I had problems with every opti I ran with the stock cap and rotor. The msd rotor is built for higher rpms and is holding up good for me at 6500rpms. Use a lot of loctite on the msd rotor; the msd rotor came off on me, even with the lictite screws msd provides with the kit.

thats the thing i have an msd unit on the car now but i dont know if it has the same issues. i would have to take it apart and check. if it does have the same problem im not sure what i could do to fix it.

was your car running normally or did it have the normal bad opti symptoms?

It would idle and drive normal but when I took it up to 6000rpm or higher it would miss or ping; then the stock rotors blew apart a few times.

I don't think its the opti; it should have a miss somewhere in the rpm range.

looks like i may have a fueling issue. pressure drops under load. leaning towards the fuel pressure regulator. while in park a stab of the throttle drops the pressure down to 30 psi. if i take the vacuum hose off of the regulator the pressure stays stong. waiting on my digital fuel pressure gauge to see whats really going on during WOT driving.
