Toluene Octane Booster!

I've called several paint supply stores for toluene... I've got prices for $12.50/Gallon and $9.79/Gallon! What gives... I've read the thread about Toluene and you guys are writting about $4/Gallon. Do you have any leads? Where do you get your Toluene from?

Here's a link for a couple of mixtures.

Homebrew Octane Booster

As far as getting the toluene, just pay whatever. It's still cheaper than race gas!!

The GN guys probably wrote that article in 1987, its alot more expensive now. It may even be worse in CA due to chemical laws or something, I think I payed about $11 a gallon.

Thanks guys... I'll call Sherwin Williams tomorrow. I called several supply stores and they are pricey. Did you make the mix with the Tuluene & Mineral Spirits & ATF?

Just use it straight. I dump a gallon in a full tank every few months for cleaning purposes. A gallon in a tank only raises the octane level like 1 point anyways.

1 gal of xylene + 3 gal of gasoline = ~100 octane

I usually just run the gas down to about a 1/4 of a tank going to the track, dump in a gallon of xylene and im good to go.

Xylene will start gnawing away at your plastic fuel lines... you might want to throw a few oz of Marvel's Mystery oil into the batch, while you're at it.

I was worried about the Xylene and/or Toluene eating the rubber seals on the fuel pump or eating the lines. Anyone else?

Toluene is no more harmful than gas. Gas actually contains some levels of Toluene in it. Using high concentrations of toluene may cause the car to start harder in cold temps.

Same here, lowe's and hope depot here don't even carry toulene, just xylene which is $10/gal. Went to a paint store and toulene was like $10.60 and Xylene was $10.40. There's one more paint store around that I can go to and hope it's sub-$9. Isn't toulene a carcinogen(sp?)

That's expensive. I've bought it here in Florida at two different paint stores; Sherwin Williams and Scott's paint for like $6.90 and $7.50 a gallon in the last few months.
