Toilet Paper: Not just for wiping butts. Pilot Bushing Removal - By Dave88LX

I posted this on a couple other sites before, but don't think I ever put it here. I've seen a couple people asking how to remove a pilot bushing, so here you go!

How to remove a Pilot Bushing - By Dave88LX

I got the general idea from another website. Said "wet toilet paper, grease, or a puller."

I'm all about doing **** ghetto style, and not paying for what I don't have to. I'm going to share my method that I found successful to remove the pilot bushing from the rear of my crankshaft. We're going to hydraulicly (sp?) remove it using wet toilet paper. Sounds crazy, but it works. TOilet paper does indeed have another use besides wiping your ****.

1. Here you can see the Bushing that is in there. It's worn out quite a bit, as evidenced by the "lip" at the back of the bushing. The shiny part with the cracks inside the hole is the back of the bushing. Yup, needs to be replaced!

2. You need some kind of lid to hold some water in. Any normal household should have a couple containers of kool-aid kicking around. Just grab the lid from one of those.

3. Next, you want to put some toilet paper in it. Put a good amount in, because you will be compressing it quite a bit. Then throw some water on top of it to get it soaked. Don't make a soup, but enoug to keep it all wet. These are the only tools that you will need. I've got a 500W halogen light shining under the car from behind, so do something similar so you can see.

4. This is what you will want to use as your "piston". Find a 1/4" drive socket that will fit through the hole. Then, flip it backwards on a nut driver, and that is your piston. Your bushing is the cylinder. I ended up using a 10mm socket.

5. Wad up some toilet paper, and put it through the hole in the bushing. You want to get it BEHIND the bushing, so as to force it out. Just keep stuffing it in there.

6. Use your "piston" and hammer to keep forcing it in there. Pack some, tap it in until you can bottom out the piston. THen pack some more, smack it in there etc. You can see it has already started to come out a little.

7. When you get it about 1/2 way out, that is a good time to give it the 'ole GFY salute. Keep on trucking.

8. Finally packed enough in there to pop it out. You'll need to pack quite a bit in there, but just keep on packin.

9. Here you can see all the wadded toilet paper and how it crept up behind the bushing and pushed it out.

10. Remove all the TP, and voila, you're done!

And who said TP was for just wiping your ***!!! ROFL!!!

I tried that little trick before with grease, but it didn't work. I borrowed a puller and slide hammer from Autozone and broke the puller trying to pull it out. I took it back and got another and then finally it came out.

Just trying to say that some are harder to get out than others.

Glad it worked for you though.

That's the way we've been doing it for years. I did it back in '97 on my WS6 when I changed the clutch a couple of times. Have done it on a couple other cars as well.

Nobody would believe it worked until they saw it But it does the job nicely

ummmm, or you could just go to AutoZone and rent the CORRECT tool for the job for FREE and have it done in less than 10 seconds. Thats what I did and couldnt have been easier. Unless ofcourse your too lazy to drive a couple of miles to the store.
