Tire Size for my '97 Camaro SS

I am looking to replace my current "really really bald" tires with GoodYear Eagle F1 GS-D3's. Unfortunately, the exact tire size for my car (275/40-17) is on backorder for a minimun of 8 weeks. I was wondering if anyone has put or knows if you can put 285/40-17 size tires on this size rim without any issues.

Thanks.

Yes, I have had Michelien 285's on my car for about two years. They fit just fine and there is no indication of any contact in the wheel well.

Should be fine, but your speedometer will be off slightly. You will be going slightly faster than what your speedometer reads.

Just wanted him to know, that's all.

The higher in speed, the higher the difference in MPH, but you're right, the difference is not large.

Wait... what does the width of the tire have to do with the speedometer? It's the diameter of the wheel plus the sidewall hight is it not? With 285 vs 275 his speedometer should read the exact same. I mean if you put bicycle wheels and tires on that still have the same overall diameter (outside dia. of wheel plus sidewall hight of tire) it would still do one full rotation in the same amount of time correct? Maybe I'm just full of it.

No okay say you bought a set of 275/45/16 alright then you bought another set 285/45/16. Got it so far the 275 stands for diameter and the 45 stands for the aspect ratio wich means its width is 45% of the diameter of the tire. gots it

The 285 is about .3" taller, no big thing.

No, just a little confused. The 285 is the width, but the 40 is a percentage (or aspect ratio, to be technical), so the sidewall height is .4 x 285. So a 285/40 would have a sidewall height of 114mm and a 275/40 would be 110mm. Therefore, the 285 will be 8mm more in diameter, or about .3in. Thats what will cause him to read slightly below his actual speed. For an example, look at a stock C5 vette. bothe tires have almost identical sidewall height, even though the front is 245/45-17 and rear is 275/40-18. Hope this helps.

I have seen a 1996 ws6 with 315's on them. fit with no problems. If you want a good bang for your buck tire, get the Kuhmos off of tire rack, not the best but for 107 bucks what the hell.

Has anyone tried putting 18's in the rear and keep the 17 x 9.5's in the front. I was thinking about putting 18 x 10 or 11's in the rear to fill up the wheel well. So what do you guys think?
