Timing sprocket on backwards?

Just got my timing cover off and the dots on the sprockets are screwed up. They are both at 12 oclock, I thought that they were suposed to be at 12 and 6, facing each other. Am i wrong? By the way the car seemed to run fine.

nope, thats fine

since the cam turns once for every 2 turns of the crank

crank at 12 and cam at 6 is TDC #6 cyl.
both at 12 is TDC #1 cyl.

sweet! so when I put the new timing set on should I alight the dots or keep them both at 12? Oh yea and the cam dowel is at 9 oclock, not 3.

Either way. Both are correct as Dave explained.
