Timing question

What's a normal amount ? I just recently bought autotap and it's showing it all over the place from 0 to 40 deg.. are we suppose to pull timing constantly ? i was always under the impression that it should only pull timing when it sences knock or some other potential problem..thanks for your help/comments

Timing is going to vary all over the place depending on engine speed, load, temp, etc.

Timing is set by a table, as a function of RPM and MAP. It does vary widely. At idle, you should see about 18-20deg advance. At low load cruise, you might see as much as 45deg. Under WOT load, 30-35deg.

You are talking about timing, and suddenly go off on "pulling timing"..... what are you talking about? Are you seeing some amount of "knock retard"? Or are you just confused by the "-" sign in front of the "advance"?

Have you read my online Scanner writeup? There's a sample of the timing table in there, and an explanation of "timing", "knock retard", the "-" sign, typical values, etc.
