Timing and its effect on exhaust popping?

If you want less popping in the exhaust system at idle and very low RPMs, do you want more or less timing at those RPM ranges? Or will timing not have much of an effect at all? I am sure that I don't have an exhaust leak, BTW.

I belive the less timing you have the less popping ussually, I'm not really sure, it doesn't make much of a difference so long as your fuel cuts off at decel.
