Question 396 M6 w/ 3.23 gears. How much am I leaving on the table?

Since being in Germany the 3.23 have been perfect for that topend run which I do a lot of. But now I've decided to up the gears on this thing and see what I've been missing. Just a basic setup of the stroker so you have a idea. 11.1 CR, 232/242 .544/.560, hydra rev-kit, LT1 heads flow well over 270cfm, 58mm tb, FLP's, & Borla exhaust.

I'm pretty sure my topend will suffer but by how much who knows. Thanks for any input you can provide.

If we had an Autobahn here in the states, I might be tempted to keep the short gears in myself.

You know the routine though.... you pick up some punch on the lowend (torque multiplication) and turn more revs for a given speed on the highway. If you want some hard numbers just check out some of the online calculators to see what you can expect. But going from the 3.23 to 3.42 IMO would be a waste of time. 3.73 or better would be a noticable difference, but 3.73 would be my choice if I were in Germany.

Thumbs up

Tranny is a M29 basically the viper ratios up to 3rd gear. Can't remember exactly the numbers. 17X11 all 4 corners 285/40/17 tire. I've got gobs of torque as it is. Nothing wrong w/ having more once I switch.

Maybe you missed it. But it's a 93. I could list the mods but it's totally redone w/ the exception of the rear. Racetronix pump, canton fuel filter, Accel 300+ , crane hi coil, 30# inj, ram-air setup (Ultra Z hood), LG torque arm, tubular upper and lower front a-arms spherical rod, tubular LCA spherical rod & PHR, Street twin clutch & alum fly, Hurst billet plus shifter, CFDS, KBDD SFC, Hotchkis 2pt STB, guages etc....you get the idea. This fall I'll switch to the deltec setup and relocate the alt to the lower driver side.

That sounds like an unusual tire size/wheel combo. Do you mean 17x9's?

No. 17x11 285/40/17. 315 rubber is too much and the sidewall deflection is greater and not what I'm trying to do when it comes to giving chase or leaving a 911TT in the twisties. There are more radical tire combo's out there than that. You can't even tell what size I'm running until you look at the tire itself. Just as wide as a 315. Here you got guys running 275's on 12 inch rims. That looks crazy but their laws state the tread must not go out past the fender well. Handles like a **** though but not pleasing to the eye for some people.

sounds like a beast, speed density brother
top speeds with 3:23's: 1-46 2-66 3-95 4-136 5-170 6-220
top speeds with 3:73's: 1-40 2-57 3-83 4-118 5-148 6-190
top speeds with 4:10's: 1-36 2-52 3-75 4-107 5-134 6-173
top speeds with 4:56's: 1-33 2-47 3-68 4-97 5-121 6-156
all with 5700 rev limit, but because youre above that i say go for the 4:10s'.....with a 6500 limit 6th is 198mph

so the handleing is better haveing 285's on 17x11's instead of the 315's? Did upgradeing to the 17x11's from the 17x9's help a lot?

For me it did. I'm also using GC coilovers w/ 600# linear front and 150# rear. Revalved bilsteins w/ a shorter piston up front since I lay low and 3rd gen bilstein out back along w/ Suspension tech 35mm bar and rear being a 21mm. Went down from the 25 because it was too much. Still have the bar though if I decide ever to change back. I'm also running -2 camber 0 toe and caster I can't remember. BIG difference in handling compared to the 9.5 LG rims I use also. I have KDW's on the 11's and Falken 451's on the LG's. Can run w/ the best of them over here.

So yes it handles alot different and more responsive. I can take turns in excess of 90-100 mphs w/out a wimper. Shocks the P-cars because they still have that old mentality w/ fbodies...big and heavy and no handling. LOL! I've been clocked punchin a hole in the wind @ 189mph to say the least.

Here's a few pics.

Well taller gears will give you the added grunt off the line but with hurting the top speed which over their you need to figure out which one you can live without.

It will leave the line a lot harder and get ready to replace that stock rear end soon after.
