Timing issue maybe?

I have an 87 Camaro but I just put a 94 LT1 in it. When I crank it, it starts and sputters and then dies. I can however hold the throttle wide open and the car will run, but it runs like crap. I have had a few friends look at it and they all say it sounds like a timing issue. I know the LT1 timing is not adjustable other than using a programmer, but is there anyway that it could have got off during the swap? I also replaced the opti-spark and cap and rotor. Is there maybe something I did wrong that might cause this problem? Im not real LT1 savy yet, so I was hoping someone in this forum might could help me troubleshoot. Im running out of ideas.

Re: Timing issue maybe?

If you did not index the opti correctly it may not (or just barely) run.

Please elaborate. I thought it would only go in one way?

That's what most people think. Unfortunately its very easy to mis-align the teeth on the splined shaft. You wouldn't believe how many people have done it incorrectly.

From Shoebox's website.

It says that it is keyed so that it can be indexed correctly. I dont really see how you could mess it up. Generally speaking, a "key" only goes one way. Right? I could be wrong. Would this cause the car to crank, start and sputter? Im sure it would. I'll check it out, but that's alot of work. Thanx guys.

It is "supposed" to go on only one way. Many people force it on incorrectly and don't seem to realize it. Personally, I don't see how people mess it up, either.

Re: Timing issue maybe?

You miss the key and the opti is spaced 1/4in from the timing cover, you hit it right and its smooth sailing up to the cover, flush and such.

You asked for help. Shoebox and I both told you what the problem might be. It is TOTALLY possible to assemble it incorrectly - we have both helped numerous people who have made this mistake. There have been numerous posts here and on other boards confriming that is can be done.

If you want to argue about the definition of a "key" there's not much more we can do to help you.

Whoa dude, I'm not arguing with you, I just seriously thought that the key would only go one way. I believe you if you say it can be done. I guess that was more of a "shock" statement that it could be put it wrong. Didnt mean to offend you. Thank you for your help and input, It is much appreciated.

I did not however replace the coil. Could that cause this type of problem as well? I talked to a buddy of mine and he said the BW coil was roughly $30 and the MSD $45-$50. Is one truly better than the other? My plans for the car are mid 12's N/A. Would the stock application work fine?
