Timing gears

Im looking in to running timing gears on my 94 ta when i finish my rebuild. I have seen threads about people who have done this using the quiet sets with out problems with knock but i cant seem to find a set for a lt1. Im gussing im going to have to do some kind of modifications to the timing cover but im not sure what im getting my self into. I know i will need an electric waterpump but what else will i run into if i go this route. I was just trying to save a few hundred so i wouldnt have to convert my opti and go with a double roller or pay like 400 for one that would fit thanks for the info.

Re: Timing gears

i did some searching on this awhile back.. i dont remember much of what i found out other then yes you need the electric water pump but you also need to mill down the back of the cover for clearance reasons. There really isnt too much info about it around, that I've found anyway.

Re: Timing gears

thats what i was running into when i was doing searches. A few people claim to have done it but i cant seem to find much as far as part numbers or info other than a using a 95 timing cover and there is some modifications needed but no info on what that would consist of or if i can use it without using a vented opti etc.

Re: Timing gears

The only option other than stock, for a 94 with unvented opti, is the crappy Lunati set..
No other set has the cam gear that's 'splined' in the center for the unvented opti drive..
To go vented, you need to change: cam, to a 95 timing cover, a vented opti[obviously] opti vent hoses, opti electrical harness...
Then you can use an electric water pump, which also allows you to use basically any good SBC roller set..
Not many options for us unvented opti users...
If you mean a 'gear drive' timing set forget also that unless you update the opti.. you can't even get a normal timing set for unvented except stock[and that Lunati mentioned above]

Re: Timing gears

Thanks for the reply thats not exactly what i was hoping to hear but i guess the truth hurts im was talking about gear drives but i was not sure if i could use one with out converting to a vented opti guess that answers the question.
Thanks Again

Re: Timing gears

yah it sucks bad, i didn't have enough money when i rebuilt my engine to go to a vented opti etc. to run an aftermarket timing set. so i'm still on OEM style gears and timing chain - the other day i ran it pretty hard and at 6200RPM when ti went to shift it was like it hesitated to shift and it wound up to about 7,000 RPM...totally scared the living bejeezus outta me as it's the only car i have right now. Everytime i get near 6k RPM now i get scared and i'm trying to be careful with how high i bring the RPMs.
