Timing Covers, and Reluctor Ring Question

I am looking at replacing my engine from my 1995 with a 1996 engine and would like to know if I can use my 1995 timing cover on an engine with the reluctor ring on the crank (1996-1997).

I plan on keeping my OBD I.

Will the reluctor fit under the 1995 cover, or would I have to pull the reluctor ring off?

Also, would I be able to use the 1996 timing cover on my 1995 if I just plugged the hole for the crank position sensor?

Thanks in advance for any useful info you might provide.

I think you can use the 95 cover with the reluctor, but you can also use the 96/97 cover with the sensor as a plug (assumin it availabel). You can also remove the reluctor altogether but then must use a pre-96 hub which is a tad longer to compensate for the reluctor thickness.

Thanks, that's good news. I'll just get a sensor to use as a plug.

I believe the engine I'll be getting will have a hub attached so I shouldn't have to change that.

No need to place a plug the sensor. It's an electrical connector so there's nothing to leak out. I have a 96 engine in my 95; used the stock 96 timing chain cover with the reluctor installed and an aftermarket keyed hub cut to the 96 hub dimension (shorter snout).

The timing cover that I will be getting won't have anything in the hole, so I at least need the sensor to plug the hole in the cover.

You're correct, the sensor needs to be installed in the timing chain cover (uses an o-ring). I misunderstood and thought you meant that you had to plug up the electrical connection in the sensor.

You could probably use a freeze plug of the correct size. It would be whole lot cheaper than a sensor you're not even going to use.

I might give that a try if I can find one the right size.
