That isnt a seperate piece. The u shaped is actaully part of the oil pan gasket, but rips easily when you pull the timing cover off. I used RTV to glue the U shape back to the timing cover, then liberally coated rtv on the other side and glue the timing cover back on. No leaks

Actually it is one piece. It's shaped like a U and it's the one that goes between the oil pan and timing cover. I see it as a seperate piece in the felpro kits but I do not need the full gasket set, just the U seal and that's it. When I replaced my opti it came off no problem but then after that it just won't seal anymore no matter how much rtv I put on it.

Are you sure you're looking at the gasket right kit? I just put the pan back on my car about 2 months ago, and the felpro kit I bought had no single u - it's all made into the pan gasket. Same thing on the old one I pulled off.

My stock one was one all one piece (the entire oil pan gasket). Mine tore and I replaced it with a felpro. It was also a one piece oil pan gasket. I have seen 4 piece oil pan sets for chevy small blocks though but I believe their is only the entire oil pan gasket option for LT1's because of the way the front part of the gasket mates to the LT1 timing cover. I have a pic of it installed in sig.

Its for sure a 1 peice oil pan gasket, which includes the U up to the timing cover. The old school SBCs have multiple piece gaskets.

I think it is part num FELPRO OS 34500 R

Ya which means unbolting the motor mounts and jacking the engine up. As already mentioned, break out the RTV and use more than you did last time

I actually would use RTV to glue the oil pan gasket onto the timing cover and let that set up over night. That will hold in firmly in place. Then you can apply more rtv when installing.

Yes. Never heard of a separate U-piece, its part of the oil pan gasket.
