Question Timing Chain Questions

Do you have to covert your OBDII to an OBDI in order to use a double roller? If so I now know why the LT4 chains cost so much more. I was told it had to do with a sensor on the crank shaft. BTW I have a 97 LT1. I wanna know before I crack open the box. I got one from the dealer today for $230 (not too bad).

Re: Timing Chain Questions

You do not need to convert to OBD1. I'm running a Rollmaster double roller on my car. I just had the CPS turned off in the computer.
Also the LT4 chain is a POS and way over priced, but if you still have a mechanically driven water pump you have no choice.

Re: Timing Chain Questions

Its so simple to put a electric pump on. Just punch the inpeller shaft off pull the seal off and put the electric in. I have a CVR pump and I didnt even have to grind anything, it went straight in. I going to buy an extra to keep in my trunk because all you have to do if it goes bad is take off 7 9mm nuts on the front and your on the road again. Dont even have to pull the waterpump to replace it.

The crank sensor really has nothing to to with it (it's not a part of the timing set). It's just a stouter set than the stock stuff.

Nothing wrong with using it. Not everyone wants to use an electric water pump.

See my sig. I already have an electric water pump. Is there a risk to turning off the CPS (crank position sensor)?

No risk man. You just won't get any misfire codes which for a lot of people is kind of a blessing considering how cams usually trick the PCM into thinking you have a misfire when actually you dont.

Re: Timing Chain Questions

I can see how the ED-LT4 timing is a POS!! There are way to many people using them, and with high HP #ers as well.

Also, if the LT4 set is too expensive! In order to use a double roll set up you have to buy a electric pump. Are they giving these pumps away for free? Summit is selling these pumps for all most $200. Cloyes true roller is $80. At these prices, the ED-LT4 timing set is a deal, only $205!!

Re: Timing Chain Questions

Cloyes will tell you the LT-4 set is as strong or stronger than a double roller due to the larger pin size.

Funny, I bought the cloyes double roller for $80 and waterpump was $100-107 (forgot the exact amount), both from jegs. I came out $50 richer and have a stronger timing chain then the over priced ED. Yay me!

Oh and the ED-LT4 is 252, you forget shipping. My total cost was $212.

Re: Timing Chain Questions

Before I return my unopened LT-4 timing chain and go with a double roller I just want to confirm a few things:

1. You must have an electric water pump (I already have one) Check!

2. You must have the CPS deleted through programing (which I will need to do anyway because of the heads and cam install). I'm getting the feeling from the posts that there is no downside to this .

3. The timing chain cover will need to be modified to accomodate the size of the new chain.

4. More money in my pocket for additional mods

The ED from GM is a Cloyes. GM jacks up the price and you can get it direct from Cloyes. Cloyes makes GM cam drive set's.

NO, the Cloyes ED is like the one you have. You can run it stock configuration.
The double roller you have to run an electric pump and grind the cover.
You can get the Cloyes chain the same as the ED from Summit for a lot less.
