Timing chain question
Timing chain question
ok guys im new to the board, but have been into camaros for a while
i have a simple common sense question, that has a long pre-story lol
ok when i purchased my car three years ago it was a base 1995 3.4 v6 coupe with pretty much every option you could get in that model, i drove it like that for a while but i had always wanted to build my own car, so i did. i started the ricer way first upgrading all of the body to its SS equivalint, using a fiberglass fabrications inc. functional SS hood, 98 and up SS spoiler and SLP's centermount exhaust, i then had the car painted and added some silver SS 30th (not 35th) anniversary stripes on a new black pearl base coat then i took a few day off from school and work and put in a drivetrain out of a wrecked z28. this being my first complete drivetrain swap i was proud of myself, and then i ran into trouble, and out of moneyfist, i blew the tranny and that was no big deal since i new a trans guy and got a great deal on a rebuild ($700) and while it was out i added a 2800-3000 converter and about two weeks after i got the trans i spun several bearings due to what i believe was a failed oil pump, to be exact it was 3 main and 2 rod bearings. Well being poor like i am i havnt had the money to send it to the machine shop until now, i am taking it down there next monday and when i get it back i will be putting a cam in it with a bit more lift then stock i dont have the cam card handy and i dont recall it off of the top of my head, but if memory serves the stock is somewhere just below .500 mine is just over that maybe .545 on a 1.5 rocker (remember these are estimates) its bigger then an LT4 and its custom ground by GTP off of a comp core, anyway finally to my question i have been told that its wise to put in either an Lt4 timing chain or a double roller and get and electric waterpump, i do not have the money for an expensive LT4 ($240 something from summit) or the combined electirc pump and double roller setup, do you think a new stock chain would work for a while until i get some spare cash to upgrade to a double roller and electric pump? i have heard from at least one person (this being my stepdad who has been a performance car mechanic for about 30 years) now im not a stupid kid who has no idea what he is doing but i have been without the car for many months and i would like to get it back together ASAP but between when i was away at college i didnt work therefore had no money i know its better to do it right the first time but good ol' step dad seems adiment that the stock chain will hold up, im just looking for some more opinions, thanks guys and sorry about the long first post

Re: Timing chain question
It would most likely hold up, no way for sure to know tho. I have seen a few guys run stock timing sets in CC306 equipped cars. I don't thinks it the best option, but if you really plan on upgrading in the near future i don't see it being a problem. I will say though, its alot of work to tear down the front of an engine just to put a new timing chain and electric water pump. The extra amount of down time waiting for the money to do it right the first time may actually be a better choice tho. I would weigh the options of what could happen if you broke the chain....see what its worth to you to go a couple more weeks without your car.
Re: Timing chain question
If you want to go to an electric pump i've got a used spare double roller i'll sell to you for ship costs ($5) its doing me no good laying around and is in perfect shape.

Re: Timing chain question
Spinner, what is the part number on that chain?
I need one, I'm in the middle of a cam/electric wp install and I've gotten 3 different part numbers from Crane Cams tech line and the chain I bought from Summit doesn't fit. Also, will a 94+ chain work on a 93 LT-1?

Here are the other summit numbers to look at the products and prices.
P/N CCA-3206 - comp cams
CLO-9-9100 - cloyes

Re: Timing chain question
I ran a stock replacement timing chain for awhile and never had any problems. I dont think it had anything to do with me throwing a rod
. Ive heard that the stock replacment is enough from several people on this board.
