Ticking noise...

I don't know too much about cars....I have a fairly louding ticking noise coming from the top of the motor when the car is at idle. It seems to go away as the engine speeds up. Any ideas?

Thanks

Re: Ticking noise...

Injectors, they naturally tick. All trucks, cars, and whatever do it to some extent.

Re: Ticking noise...

My car sounds like a freaking sewing maching...but i have aftermarket rrs.

I agree most fuel injectors will tick just a little, it wont be very audible as rpm increases.

Has your car always done this or is it something new?

Re: Ticking noise...

ticks can be injectors, exhaust leak, or spark arcing from the wires. Also rockers, maybe there's more I missed.

Make sure you don't have a loose spark plug.

Re: Ticking noise...

I also have a 95 z28 a4... with 98k miles on it, without anything done to it besides a cold air kit. I started it up one morning and heard an unusually loud ticking from the passenger side top of the engine, that would lessen when it warmed and became almost unnoticable at highway speeds. I immediately brought it into my regular mechanic and he sent me to a speed shop. They said it wasnt tinny enough for a valve tap and not really deep enough for a lower engine problem. I babied the car(tried to stay under 2k rpm) for 3 weeks until my appointment for them to diagnose the noise. I did notice it had a slight power loss when pulling onto the highway, but the tapping always got quieter when it warmed. Strangely enough, I woke up the day before my appointment and there was absolutely no tapping what so ever. No power loss.. nothing, like it was back to normal.... until I decided to take it up to highway speed at a decent pace. I almost got to 3k rpm when i blew a rod. The car is now sitting at the engine shop waiting for me to finish paying the ($4400.00)new engine cost! I would have it looked at asap... Good luck!
