Tick Sound

Tick Sound
YES I have searched but still cant decide what it is. I have a 95 Z with stock manifolds. This tick has just started in the last week. The ticking can be heard best if your behind the front tires by the doors. I just changed plugs and wires, and checked for loose plugs and/or burnt or aching wires. It has good oil pressure. The tick cant really be heard from above the engine or the front end unless standing far away.( Echo Im guessing.) The car runs great still and dont notice any loss in power. Ive had a friend with a stethoscope listen to internals/injectors and said they all sound fine and the same. Its not the ticking that makes me irritated, its the fact I dont know what it is. Any suggestions would be fine with me.

Re: Tick Sound
Do what I do which is just wait until something breaks. LOL! If the ticking is not that loud it is probally fine. You can drive your self insane trying to track down all the nosie these thing make.
What oil are you running? I was using lucas and it made my lifter tick noise louder.
my 2 cent.

Re: Tick Sound
Obtain a 3-4 foot piece of garden hose, stick one end to your ear and cover the entire exhaust system with the other end. An ear plug in your other ear works even better. You should be able to find the tick.

Re: Tick Sound
Just get someone to hold thier hands, over the tailpipe. It will build up backpressure ( Whatch, it gets hot, fast ) and you can hear it hissing if there is a exhuast leak somewhere. This is how we find leaks 99% of the time at the garage I work at.

Re: Tick Sound
Thanks for the tips you guys. Ill go out and try them in a bit. As far as the loudness, I can hear it good and echo off of buildings, but i dont know if that counts because i know its their and listen for it if you know what i mean. The cat is gutted, for whoever asked ealier. Im runnin 5W30 oil, and its only got like 500 miles or so since last change. As i said earlier, it can be heard best when kneeling next to each of the doors, but can hear it far away from all sides from the echo im guessing. I went out this morning since it was very cold here in IN, and didnt see any exhaust leaks, but im gonna look again. Also, pretending an exhaust leak wasnt a choice, are they any other things that would make it tick like that and not be heard really from the front/top of motor (unless farther away)???

Re: Tick Sound
i had a tick in my motor also and was not able to find the problem, well it came time for a oil change so i changed the oil and to my findings no more tick, not sure but that seemed to work for me.
i use 10w30 mobile one oil and the best filter i can buy so you may try that.

Re: Tick Sound
Thanks for the info z95lt1. The tick just started within like the last week and half or so. Before it kind of ticked from the front, and i found a loose plug, tightened it and it went away. Now its a similar to that sound but you cant hear it from the front as well as the middle of the car, and sounds like its coming from the middle of the underside. Any other ideas?

Re: Tick Sound
My AIR fittings on my headers make a ticking noise. Their kinda a one-way little flapper. Check them.
Also, FWIW, have you heard someone elses car with headers on it and listened closely? You can kinda hear a slight tinny, pulsy noise. Very faint. Its a header thing. Definatly could be mistaken for a mechanical tick sound if your not familiar with what to look for.
