First I'd check to see if you have any broken vacuum lines going to the EGR valve or the sensor that controls it. Then I'd check with a vacuum gauge to see if the EGR is actually moving, or if it's stuck open or closed. Also, when the car is running, you can open the EGR valve with a vacuum pump to verify the valve is opening and the ports are open also. Thre might be other possiblity's too that someone else could give more info on.

the EGR valve does most of it's job with light throttle high vacuum driving, like interstate driving, or going up slight inclines at light throttle, I had a EGR problem on a ford van that bugged me for a month at work till i figured out what it was.

Had the same problem you are having, light only comes on at steady highway speeds after about 4 miles of highway driving, it was an EGR code and replaced it and no more problems, also note when my light came on my cooling fans also started running.

Me, too...replaced the EGR and no more problems...just inspect the vacuum lines when you replace it...
