thread sealant on a head bolt

if i remember some previous reading correctly, you only use thread sealant on head bolts and not a loc-tite, correct? i wouldnt think that you would use a loc-tite on a head bolt. also, would a high temp thread sealant from autozone work just as well as, say ARP thread sealant?

i'm just going over procedures in my head and making sure that i'm going to be putting the engine back together right. this is one of those procedures i couldnt remember exactly what i was supposed to use. thanks.

No you do not use loc-tite. The clamping force of the threads on these 57-million head bolts on these engines will keep it tight. Don't use RTV or anything like that, but the thread sealant you're talking about should be fine.

I used aircraft sealer. Permatex makes it.

Yes, it's not recommended to use the locking compound on these bolts. Loctite also makes the same thread sealer.

Re: thread sealant on a head bolt

I put thread sealant on the threads and ARP lube under the head of the bolt. This helps to eliminate false torque values (low torque) due to friction. Also run a thread chaser down the holes first to clean the threads.
