Thoughts? (Stutter...AF gauge related)

My car was doin the whole "stutter down low thing" the other day (stopped for a while) and as it was stuttering the SES light came on and then it magically ran fine........strange. Thoughts? Bad 02's maybe? Sometimes my A/F gauge works and sometimes it is solid black....but when it works the car runs like a champ.

In this past week i have had that damn stutter down low, and its really pissing me off. I think maybe i got some bad gas or something. I threw in some fuel injector cleaner, after i run it down, hopefully the stumble goes away.

still does it. it seems that whenever the A/F gauge works the car runs fine. but sometimes the AF gauge doesnt work and the car stutters and bucks. when it stutters and bucks after a while the SES light comes on and then it runs fine again (no stuttering, bucking) what is going on????

I cured the low RPM stumble. Turns out there was some mositure in the tank. 2 Bottles of dry gas took care of it. You might want to try that out. Your problem seems a little more serious, but you never know.

could a vacuum leak cause this? like the tube that goes to the throttle body to the passenger side valve cover is cracked at the throttle body side and im sure there is no vacuum.

well here is the deal. It seems when the car is sitting in the heat for a long while when i start it the AF gauge wont light up when the key is turned to the "ON" position. then after warm up the car stutters and feels like a diesal. but at night and in the morning when it is cooler outside when i turn the key to "ON" position the AF guage lights up and the car runs PERFECT. im so close to fixing this i just cant put my finger on it.

My car stumbles sometimes and I was told that the fuel could be atonomizing (sp?) in the fuel rails. The fuel is boiling or something like that before it gets injected into combustion chamber. That is caused by it getting hot, which is part of your problem right? I would also check the o2 sensors because isn't that what you a/f guage works off of? If they are not working when the car is running funny, then it has to do with the o2 sensors.

the "stutter" seems to be a very common problem, but there are a variety of causes...........here are the most common fixes that i have seen work for people

plugs bad/wires arching (replace)

EGR valve clogged (replace or remove)

IAC valve bad (replace or clean)

O2 sensors bad (replace)

Optispark bad (replace)

MAP sensor bad (replace or clean)

fuel filter (replace)

dirty maf (clean)

for my stutter.....first i tried fuel filter and MAP.....didnt fix it.....

then i removed EGR, and replace plugs/wires all at once...........stutter gone!

UPDATE

I changed the IAT sensor and that helped a little but. The car now runs better more often. But it still does the stutter thing once in a while. The most common time for the stutter is during the day. At night, and first thing in the morning, it runs great. But in the afternoon the car tends to stumble more often.

When I start the car I know when the car will run good or not. If my a/f gauge lights up I know that the car is gonna run great. If, the a/f doesn't come on when I start the car it's gonna run like crap.

Since the IAT change the car now runs smooth more often than not. I'm out of idea's....everything got_hp listed I have done.

Could my a/f gauge be screwing things up? Can a bad connection or ground on the gauge cause it to malfunction, and when the gauge malfunctions so does the car?

As I was reading along, that was going to be my suggestion. Not sure how you have the a/f gauge wired up, but it might be interfering with the pcm. The O2 sensor wiring is very finicky.

(Almost did not read this thread because there is no real subject-it helps to put something meaningful in there so people can recognize the thread. It also helps when people use the search.)
