Question In thory which would give better flow?

Both exhaust systems would be running Hook LT's, except one setup would use an Y-pipe and a Catback. While the other would consist of true duels with either an X-Pipe or an H-Pipe (which ever you want to use) and mufflers. Note do not include CATS in any of the two setup (gotta love southern emission laws). So which should give better flow?

Thanks,

Chris

Well accoring to everything i have heard and read, the true duals will flow better, but the difference is not significant (maybe a couple hp) until you are pushing big hp and tq numbers

So it doesn't really matter until you get up into the big numbers.

Area=pi*r^2

Generally, the combination with the most area will flow best.

So your saying a 4inch catback with a Y Pipe will offer the same flow as true duels with 2 inch pipes?

Actually by the math the 4" should flow better, since the margin is considerable(A=12.56 for the 4" and 6.28 total for the 2x2") I would not doubt that statement. There are other factors that will bring them closer, but I would have to dust off the fluid mechanics books to bust those out.

Okay, I GOT to throw in a wrench here.
I have heard over & over again about the blessings and how much better a "true dual" exhaust is, fact is that I spoke with Don Lorentzen, he's been a muffler guy for DECADES, owns a muffler shop in Orange California, he & his son, Kevin are members of the Southern California Camaro Club Connection(SCCC), he told me that putting duals in an f-body as opposed to a 3-inch catback single is very debatable, he says that the true duals with 2-1/2 inch pipes give virtually the same performance as a 3-inch single, and 3 inch duals are only advantageous if your are pushing SERIOUS HP(500+), so there you go.

Hmmm...

I figure, heck, Don should know, he's been doing mufflers for decades, I'm sticking with a 3 inch catback.

Magnaflows are great stainless pipes for a paltry sum of money. If you don't like the tips, buy other ones, and you got a great cat-back system for cheap.

Just my .02

true dual wont outflow a 4" exhaust. it will sound better, but will not outflow it.

and yes, unless u are making some power a 4" is a little too much.

So from what I take a 3 inch single pipe with a Y Pipe and a cat back is the best way to go.

Single exhaust
3 inch y-pipe $200
Catback $300-600
Install $100
Total $600-900

This is what I paid for my duals and no discount either.
True duals
x-pipe and remaing pipe installed $250
Mufflers $35 each
Total $320
Sound (Priceless)
So basically the true duals are half priced. Take the extra $300-600 and buy some more mods like a hotcam which goes awesome with Lt's and duals. Just get 2 1/2 duals so you dont overdue it. Almost all V-8 run duals so they have to be good for something. I dont have any internal work with my Lt's and duals but it still made it a beast. And I know later I will be doing more so I am already for cam and heads. Get the duals you will not be let down.
