Question things needed for slp dual cat shorty install?

Hi im new here,

I just picked up a set of slp dual cat shorty headers. I didn't get the installation kit that slp sells figuring i could get the parts i needed cheaper, but im not sure of everything i need.

I am planning on getting stage 8 locking header bolts and a set of felpro gaskets(anyone know the part #?) What else do i need to complete the installation? will i be able to pick up the parts at a local autozone or NAPA? also im in california, so i need any parts necessary to keep it emissions legal.

on a side note, how will the shorties change the exhaust note? i already have a flowmaster 80 series on the car.

thanks in advance

First off, you'll need some exhaust gaskets to mate your headers to your stock y-pipe. I know gm sells these and they are unique to each side. In other words the gaskets are not the same for both sides. You'll also need 6 bolts and nuts to mate them together, The stock manifolds use studs, so you won't be able to reuse them. You might need a spark plug wire heat sleeve for the #7 wire (last one on the back of the block, driver's side). I used the slp install kit and it came with a heat sleeve for this wire since it runs real close to the header, just something to look out for. I hope this helps. Oh yeah, the exhaust note will get a tad deeper than stock .

You don't really need stage 8 locking bolts. They would be to much of a pain in the rear to install and remove if needed. Get regular header bolts and 3/8" lock washers. It's far easier to install and I've never had a header bolt back out when using them. Also, look into the copper header gaskets. The Fel-pro's might leak. The coppers may be like $50, but it's money well spent. They don't leak. Trust me I just replaced the header gaskets on my friends 96 SS with SLP headers. The SLP gaskets are crap and he had the driverside replaced a few months back and they used Fel-pro's and there was evedance of leakage. Oh and one more thing, get the sparkplug socket from SLP. It's still a pain in the neck with it, but without it, it totally sux. Sparkplug access was forgotten about obviuosly. Other than that, they look good and made good power gains on his ride. Good luck and may patience be with you.

I have the dual cat 1 3/4. They make the car a little louder. I would go with regular bolts and lock washers. They are kind of a pain in the but already to install.

I had to remove the steering shaft to get the drivers side in or maybe it was to remove the manifold I forget now its been awhile. Do plugs and wires while your at it because they will be a pain to do after the headers are in.

Are yours coated? I would definately coat them first. Buy some heat tape too. I wrapped the hoses to the heater core and the tube to the egr. You might wanna get some plug wire boots.

thanks for the number speed76demon!

ok, i guess i will just get regular bolts. i figured that the bolts might back themselves out. i think i'll go with the felpro gaskets though, i can't afford the copper ones and many people run the felpros without them leaking. i'll look into the slp spark plug socket, it sounds like a good investment!

i plan to do plugs and wires when the manifolds are off. the headers aren't coated, but rust isn't a problem where i am. plus they are stainless steel. i don't mind if they corrode a bit on the surface and look like ***, just as long as they don't rust through. plus slp gives a limited lifetime warranty against rust on all their exhaust products. i will definately get the heat tape and wrap what you mentioned ZLT195.

thanks everyone for your help

Like others said, watch out for the spark plug wires. I had two on the passenger side burnt, and it is a PITA to change those wires after you put the headers in. And then, some local guy down here had his passenger side of the engine bay burnt after the wires caught on fire. Better safe than sorry.

I would have them coated to keep it cooler under the hood.
