Thermostat or water pump maybe?

Went out to meet up with the family yesterday (first day above 100 im sure the car has seen possibly ever). anyways I was driving around for about 45 min or so (mixed highway and city) no temp problems at all. i stopped at a gas station for about 4-5 min and left. Before i got out of the parking lot i spotted the guage start to spike, so i quick turned it off before it redlined (was close).

After that i opened the hood and let it cool for a couple seconds and watched coolant come out the resavoir. after a few minutes i checked the temp, started it so i could park it....watched it and the problem went away, WTF.

To finish i ended up just finishing the drive to the relatives (couple miles) and had no problems.. filled it with water, which was not even near a gallon and had no more problems the rest of the day....while using the A/C

Anyone know what the problem could be? I would think the stat first but it wouldnt have cooled down in 5 min to close, would it?

A gallon is ALOT considering the cooling syst. holds around 14-16qts.
Where did the coolant go? You need to find out.
Check your fans and check to see if your t-stat is operational.

It'd still be a good idea to find out why you lost that much coolant.

Re: Thermostat or water pump maybe?

In most water pump failures the coolant seeps or in some cases POURS out of the weep hole at the bottom of the pump. Easy enough to check.
