thermostat sticking to the housing

Has anybody had to deal with the issue of the thermostat sticking to the housing? I want to give it a big tug but don't want to break anything. Any suggestions?
Thanks

I think the big tug is all you'll need. If you're going to replace it you can grab the old one with a pair of vice grips and yank away...

Thanks, it worked. The car is still running hot. Anybody have any suggestions what the next step is or, what the problem could be?

Thanks again

Yes as far as I know. I filled the radiator with coolant, started the car and allowed it to run for about 10-15 mins. The coolant started to bubble out and the temp gauge reach over the 210 mark so I turned the engine off. I noticed a "tap " on the end of the housing. Is that used to let the air out? Where should I go from here?

what year is your car? i think older lt1s have one bleeder screw, later models have 2. someone will correct me if im wrong. shoebox has a detailed writeup on his site on how to bleed the cooling system properly, you should go there.

They all have two bleeders. The 93's are a bit different, because one of them is on the bottom plate of the throttle body. Here's the links from Shoebox:

You also have to make sure you have the correct LT1 thermostat:

Re: thermostat sticking to the housing

Thanks fellows. I think I found the problem. I think there is a crack in the radiator. As soon as I figure out how to remove the radiator, I will be in business. How many hoses do I disconnect? Is it 2 or 3. Its been a while. If anybody has recently done this, I would appreciate the help. I'm trying to save every penny possible. I have a '97 z28 6 speed

Thanks

Re: thermostat sticking to the housing

Just pull the radiator cover- drain the radiator and disconnect the lines running to it. Unplug your fans and pull them out as a unit- its a little easier than trying to get the fans off the radiator in the car. Installation is opposite of removal.

Cool. I'm glad you mentioned pulling the fan and radiator both. I was wondering about that earlier. Thanks for the help. I'm gonna give it a shot tomorrow.
