Re: thermastat in the water pump?

The water inlet "neck" is held down by 2 bolts just below the throttle body.
Your thermostat should be inside that.

Don't run a car without one, the cooling system can't function properly without it. It's a $10 part and installs in a few seconds.
Be SURE to use the LT1 "tall" thermostat, the short SBC ones will not work.

Uh, no, it's in the water pump. As is shown by the pics you linked.

Yes.

I suggest looking now for whatever else the previous owner hacked up before something else blows up.

I've head that running it that way:

1. Builds sludge (I don't know why)
2. Cools the front cylinders but lets the back cylinders get extremely hot.

Get one in it.

If you take the WP off, you won't find a thermostat in it.
You have to take the neck off. (Changing a T-stat does not
require removing the pump)
I think either your are confused or we are confused of your wording. The thermostat is located on top of the water pump housing.

OMG, I'm an idiot.
Yes, it's sitting on top of the water pump housing.
I was spacing out and thinking of a different engine altogether.

Sorry guys, I'll shut up now.
