Testimonial to aftermarket Ignition Systems

In diagnosing my horrible rich condition/hesitation problem (thread entitled "I'm at a loss here"), I unplugged my Accel 300+ and plugged the stock wires back into the coil. Car ran worse than before. Plug the Accel back in, car runs better, but still back to where I was only. I can only surmise that the Accel, by way of providing a hotter spark (probably not right terminology, but it's too early on a friday to think), is able to burn more of the excess fuel off than the stock ignition setup. Just thought I'd share my findings for those who say an aftermarket ignition is worthless.

An aftermarket ignition may be essential for certain applications. Mine will blow out the spark with the MSD disconnected. But for a stock or mildly modded car there is no benefit what so ever. Trust me on this, I have tried it on the dyno.

I'm not trying to say that they add HP. That, even I find hard to believe. What I do think though is that they provide a better more consistent spark than the stock system does.

I put a Hypertech coil and GMPP distributor in my 91 SS454 pickup and it made a huge difference. The engine only had 28K miles on it and it burned off some deposits right away. Even if a hotter ignition doesn't add power, it's worth it to keep the combustion chambers as clean as possible which in the end will help keep power up.

on EVERY car I have installed a MSD the car has idled better and pulled the top end harder.

Bad part for the LT1? Kills Optis every 20-30k miles

I don't doubt what you posted, but it is not contradictory. The ignition on a 4th gen is much better than on a '91 to start with, and I was intending to refer to stock vs. aftermarket with good plugs, wires, etc.

Joe Prince told me this:

"Don't even think twice about getting the Accel 300+. I've personally been on the dyno and compared ignitions and lost HP with everything other than the Accel 300+."

Take it as you will, that's what I was told. I like mine, but I like the MSD Digital 6+ on my purple car too.

MSD 6-AL...112,000...original opti. Now it has only been for ~60,000 miles, but I haven't had any problems(knock on wood...there needs to be a knock on wood smilie). I noticed a big difference with the idle for sure. It also seems to start up better. And before I installed it, I was getting stuck on the rev limiter and it would kind of bounce around. I think it helped out. Don't know about hp gains, but I do know it smoothed things out. My .02.

My original opti lasted 100,000, with 90,000 hooked to an MSD. I also don't think that it adds horspower, but the car does idle at least a little better with it, and throttle response feels better as well.

I guess you only have to think once about buying the Accel. If you think twice you may lose hp

.
When somebody tells me: "Don't even think twice about getting the Accel 300+. That tells me I shouldn't think about buying it. Let alone think twice. I guess I was just reading it wrong or something. Sorry
