Terrible day...Help?!?

So Tonight I was commin back from a car meet drivin all nice and slow..and my buddy was behind me in his mustang...There was some guy in some car tailgating his *** real bad like he wanted to race so I was like " i dont wanna get involved and I want to see whats up" So I pull over in this little thing to the side and they fly past me...I wanted to catch up so I put it in reverse and put down half throttle ( jumped a bit ) then I put it into Over drive and Did half throttle again to catch up to them quick....The car went into second gear and Revved up to about 3,000 RPMs then everything stopped...There was a quick grinding noise and I looked at my gauges and I had normal oil pressure, Gas, temps, and My RPMS were at 0...I was pressin on the gas over and over and nothing happend... My power steering stopped, then came to a stop...Totaly oblivious to everything, I tried to start it over and over...It turns but doesnt start.. i dont think The engine is blown...I lifted the hood and Smoke is commin out from the back of the engine ( i'm guessing transmission but this was rebuilt a few months ago ) then smoke was commin out of the exhaust...It's not thick or white so I didnt blow a head gasket I'm so confused. Oh, and it wasnt leaking anything at all.

My friends say its a broken fuel pump, I think its valve stuff, or transmission, any help!?

if it was tranny it would start still.
when there is smoke that isnt a good sign. start checking everything top to bottom.

yeah the engine Turns, but doesnt start...The smoke came from behind the engine and smelled like oil...there wasnt alot of smoke though...
My gauges said everything was ok, I had oil pressure.

I think it could be fuel pump no?

fuel pumps dont make a grinding noise then make smoke come from behind the engine and out the exhaust when they go... so im gonna say probally not on that one. but check it to be sure it didnt die when whatever happened happened.

I really hope it isnt any thing expensive...I have to wait until monday to hook it up to scanners. I'm nervous.

Fuel, air, fire, timing are what you need. Check your fuel pressure with a gauge. Pull a plug and see if there is fire. If not, work your way back to the coil.

You said it made a quick grinding noise?? Broken timing chain possibly. Pull a valve cover and have a friend crank the ignition while you watch the rockers. Since the opti is driven by the cam, it won't fire if the timing chain is broken.

Unhappy

Hey guys, I'm Red93Camaros friend. I was int he car when this happened, and I am a mechanic. First I tried putting starting fluid int he throttle body, if it was a fuel related problem I would have fond out from that, but the pump still works anyway. Then I took off the oil cap to see the valves and had him crank it, and I saw the rockers and valves moving, so it can't be the timing chain, since that means the camshaft is moving as well. I didn't get to check spark yet, but I do believe it has spark considering the night it happened it would sputter lightly for a second meaning there was some sort of firing, but I still need to actually check it. When the brief grind happened it wasn't too loud or bad, but immediately after the motor shut off. Not sure what I could be, but for the most part I get the feeling it might have something to do with valves. Just because they are moving doesn't mean they are functioning right (bent valves) though that would be odd that it wouldn't fire at all. I still need to go through the entire process of elimination and figure it out step by step, and it should get on a scanner soon. But does anyone have any other ideas? Maybe something I haven't thought of or just overlooked or don't know? BTW: All fluid levels were perfect, oil and tranny are still fresh, and car has just over a hundred thousand miles and in very good condition, and never had any other problems. Thanks a lot in advance, hope this helps and somebody can help us.

Since its a 93, you can flash the trouble codes on the SES light, by shorting the ALDL pins. Have you tried that?

No I haven't, I I think I'll just wait until I can't get it on the scanner, hopefully later on today. Thanks. If not I might just try it.

Instead of trying to guess what it is the best thing to do is start twisting some wrenches.
