Tensioner not doing its job!!!

So my belt was screeching alot and the battery voltage was dropping today on the way home so i pulled it onto ramps and the tensioner thingy ( I think you call it) is not providing any tension. When i take the wrench to it and try to put it in its right place and take the slack out, it DOES, but then goes right back! So i guess my question is. Where do i get it and how hard is it to replace and i guess, is it expensive???? THANKS!

Tensioners cost ~$20 and takes all of 5 minutes to put in. 2 10mm bolts and you're done. You dont even need to jack up the car although it would be easier. You can get a new OEM one from the dealer or go to Autozone, NAPA, etc.

Re: Tensioner not doing its job!!!

I'd check for a stretched/worn belt before I started replacing the tensioner. There is a "pointer" on the tensioner frame. To work correctly, the pointer needs to be in the marked range. If the pointer is outside the marked range, your belt has stretched and replacing the tensioner isn't going to help a bit.

There's a spring in the tensioner... trying to force it into a new position with a wrench isn't going to accomplish anything. Its meant to spring back.

So.......
