temperature problems
Was the overflow at the hot or cold level?
If it's at the hot level on a cold engine and your radiator is missing coolant, you may have some kind of an air leak to the overflow tank to where is pulling air instead of the coolant back into the radiator. I would first check that.
Next thing, rent the cooling system pressure tester and test the system as I described above.
Also, I've done a compression test, but never a leak down. I "think" a leak down test would help prove head gasket issues as well(I think that is what your buddy was describing).

So I finally got the heads off the car. Took them to the machine shop today. Machine shop guy was like CSI of head gaskets.
He said the gaskets looked like they'd had a ton of stop leak run through the cooling system at some point. I've had the car 5 years so it had to be before that.
Both gaskets had leaked across their centers. I couldn't see by looking at them, but he said it was obvious.
So, anyway, I'm not sure how much was cause and how much was effect, but the end result was both gaskets blown. No obvious cracks but he's checking them over tomorrow. $220 to deck and clean them, new seals and all ready to bolt back on if they're salvageable. I can float the power bill next month to get that done if it's a possibility.
Hate to put it back together stock now that it's all stripped down though.
And I'm interested in opinions if anyone else here has pulled LT1 heads off while the motor was still in the car? I had very little time to work on it over the past couple of months but I truly believe it would have been faster to drop the motor. Even considering dropping it to put them back on. Not sure how to properly torque head bolts and do valve lash under that cowl.
Not to mention I'm not sure it's possible to remove the passenger side exhaust manifold without dropping the engine??? I couldn't remove it and finally worked around it to remove the head with the exhaust manifold still sitting off to the side. So I'm assuming now would be the opportune time for headers.
