Temp Spiking

So my car has been pegging the temp gauge once a day whn i drive.it goes to the max then all of a sudden it drops back to 180... I have changed the thermo stat and the fans work so i dont know what it could be. And now the temp gauge doesn't even work.

It might have been a defective temp sensor or wiring to the temp sensor all along, that finally failed.

Here's a link to Shoebox's temp sensor check-out procedure: http://shbox.com/1/4th_gen_tech2.html#ect

Sounds like air in the system. Try bleeding it.

I done that several times. and it is always low on coolant but i have checked for leaks numerous times. How does air get into the system other then by taking the cap off.

if its always low on coolant, you need to find out where it is going first.

It wouldn't hurt to check the condition of the oil. If the oil is milky, it might explain where that coolant has been going.

Checked for trouble

Hi, thanks for replying. I have checked for:
Leaks
air in system
wiring etc...
Everything seems to be fine.

The temp gauge was fluctuating a bit last week when I took it out for the first time since Nov. But I didnt think it was serious.
Yesterday I look down at the gauge while ont he highway and its pegged at over 260!!!!!
I stopped let it sit for 30 minutes and when I started it up it was still pegged at 260!!!
But the car wasnt really hot.........weird!
can it just be stuck there??

It's about there time

funny that more then 10 years since the Lt1 was out and I notice people are having the same problems with certain things. It is the temp sensor on the block. I changed mine and it runs good. I had the same problem. I guess this is the time when the sensors and gaskets go. damn my car is already 11 years old. Dont forget to do the sensor on the pump

It could be the wire to the temp sensor in the head is grounded out.
