Thumbs down Temp, on the red... water gurgling

Well today i wanted to have a drive, so i drove about 35 miles on the freeway, drove 35 miles back, fueled up and am about 5 miles from home, and running about 210-220...

well the engine stedily raises from 220 to 230... and im about 1 mile from home it crosses 235, then 240... and now is touching the red mark.

so i quickly go home, to hear my water boiling...

usually it doesnt cross the 235 mark on the dash, but it did this time...

i hope nothing was damaged but what do i do to make sure this never happens again!? the fans (a fan may not be both but its a loud hissing) were coming on at about 230... its about 95 outside...

what should i do?

Are you losing any coolant out of the waterpump weephole?

Is your thermostat stuck?

Are you losing any coolant in general, i.e., into the crankcase (blown head gasket)? Might want to run a compression test to make sure.

Check your coolant level also.

do you have a stock waterpump? look in front of your radiator to see if theres anything obstructing the air flow like paper. did you try to bleed the system when it overheated?

Check your Radiator Cap. The center part of my cap was damaged and I did hear the gurgling on the coolant and vapor coming out of the overfill reservoir. I replaced the cap and bleed the thing....

Its been 2 years since then..... changed the coolant a few times and hasnt overheated with the replacement cap. I kinda feel its time to replace the cap again though.

Try a thermostat. Or better yet, if you are a cheap bastage like me, check the one you have. Put it in a pot of water and see if it opens before the water boils, or around 180 if you have a thermometer. Mine did the same thing and it turned out to be the thermostat. I had to get an AC Delco one, because three from autozone were all bad. Good luck

Yeah, try the stat. Just make sure they gave you the "reverse cool" kind.

Is the airdam on the bottom of the radiator support? A car that persistently overheats especially when moving is usually missing the dam.

there was no thermostat in the wp?... did i read that right??

you have to bleed the air out of the system b/c air isnt a very good conductor of heat like coolant is. you could try opening the rad cap and then start up the car to see if the coolant is circulating... of course do it when the engine is cold and for no longer than a minute.
