temp gauge question

i just put the motor in my car for the second time this summer and this time the temp gauge on the dash does not work. I put a new sensor in and that did not fix it. When i hook up a scan tool the engine is running at 170. Is there anything else besides maybe a shorted wire that could cause it

Re: temp gauge question

The temp guage on the dash reads from the sensor in the drivers side head. I have manage to melt the wiring just behind the sensor plug with my headers. In an attempt to secure them out of the way I also put a bit to much tension on the wires and pulled on from the plug. I would bet on a wire problem as opposed to the senosr itself. You can by the wiring pigtail and try that.
