Temp gauge maxing out when car shut off

Temp gauge maxing out when car shut off but works fine when car is running.

Any ideas? Bad sensor in head? electrical short?

Thanks,

Jason

I've seen that in older vehicles with analog guages. I would say that it's just heat soak from the pump not removing the hot water from the block, or an air pocket that's getting super-heated.

It really has nothing to do with the type of gauge...the gauge is reading the actual temperature of the coolant. When the pump stops pumping, the block heats the water rapidly......

It's quite normal.

The gauage will go all the way to the RED as soon as the key is off, but will read normal with the key on. The Gauge never did this till the engine swap. Its like the gauge is getting voltage somehow when the key is off. You can acutally watch the gauge move all the way over once you turn off the car and resume correct temp when the key is back on.
