TB plate baffle seal... any use?
TB plate baffle seal... any use?
Mine's all deformed and in **** poor shape. I'm thinking of just running a thin bead of silicone around the plate and screwing it back on. The dealer wants to sell me the plate and seal for $33.
But, I got to thinking about this rubber seal and how it might act as a one-way valve under throttle to keep oil from getting sucked into the intake. But, I've just installed a gravity filter between the valve cover and TB so I'm thinking it'll be fine.
Thoughts?

Re: TB plate baffle seal... any use?
I apologize. What I meant to say was the dealer will only sell it to me with the plate for $33. I'm not paying $33 for a rubber seal. It's just not right.
Parts stores either don't carry it or it's so bizarrely labeled that none of them can find it.

Re: TB plate baffle seal... any use?
I just picked up a pack of universal gasket material from autozone... it had like, 3 or 4 sheets of 1 foot square material... cork, cork backed rubber, rubber, paper... I think. anyway, I made one out of rubberized cork & it seems to be doing ok.
Re: TB plate baffle seal... any use?
Yeah I picked up some rubberized fiber material but got to thinking it won't act like a baffle like the thin rubber does. Either I need the thin rubber or don't need anything (except a silicone bead) the way I see it.
Re: TB plate baffle seal... any use?
What does that gasket do anyways? I always wondered. I am talking about the one that goes under the plate that sits on the top of the tb to make sure we are thinkin the same one.
Re: TB plate baffle seal... any use?
If we are talking about the gasket under the TB plate i'm pretty sure the dealer is BSing you. You should be able to get that with a tb gasket kit that comes with the top and bottom gasket as well as the gasket for the TB to Intake. If the GM dealer dosn't have that in kit form, BBK sells a gasket kit. It's not rubber like the stock one but don't see why it wouldn't work as well.
If all else fails, buy a TB plate of your choice from somewhere like Ebay, they are cheap, look cool and have the gasket with it.

Re: TB plate baffle seal... any use?
This isn't the traditional type gasket - PHenomic we are talking about the same thing. I've been thinking about this and what I believe it does is keep hot crankcase air from entering the intake track at throttle of some amount.
The way I believe it works is this 'seal' is thin rubber so the vaccum created under throttle will suck it down onto the housing of the throttle body, then closing off the path between the PCV hose and the intake track.
For this reason, I believe I need that rubber seal and if I don't get it I'll be feeding the engine not only hot but possibly oilier than usual air from the crankcase.

Mtrhds already gave you the correct information, it's part #17113074, the gasket for the top and bottom of the TB.. not the tb to intake gasket, as that's a separate part # in itself and sold individually.
Take this info to the retarded jackass at your dealership parts counter and tell him to order this without asking questions. I HATE most dealership counter parts guys... cept dal and cromer of course.

And with those holes in it, its obvious its not moved by vacuum or anything else. Its just a simple gasket. If they made it just wide enough to go over the edges of the throttle body, it would be so flimsy it would be almost impossible to install, particularly on a production line.

I'd just write it off to slight changes in vendor, etc by GM but at this point I believe the one that came on the car was flimsy rubber for a reason.
