TB Bypass: What Is It & How Does It Work?

i was getting a intake gasket put on my 96 Z yesterday by a friend of mine that is a service tech at GM. he noticed i hadnt done that TB bypass mod yet, so he went ahead and did it for me.

so im like cool.....but what exactly did he do? how does it better performance?

Theoretically, by not having the hot coolant running through the throttle body the intake air should be cooler and you should gain horsepower. It's been mentioned that GM engineers designed it to keep the throttle plate from warping when driving in cold air. My concern would be that there can be moisture coming in and freeze the throttle open on those long cold cruises. If I lived in a cold weather climate and drove the car in the winter, I'm not sure if I would bypass it

Basically you take the two coolant hoses off the TB and and connect them together. This keep hot coolant from flowing thru your TB.

It's supposed to be the best of the free mods and gains of 5-7 rwhp have been shown from it. I have heard that it was really intended to keep the throttle body from freezing up in extremely cold temps, like sub zero weather. Unless you live in Alaska or N. Dakota etc. I don't think its going to be a problem.

I wanna know what you guy's results were after the TB bypass. I have not done this mod yet and was wondering if it's worth doing on my stock 96 z28. All I'm running with as for mods is flowmaster cat-back, GMS MAF, Airfoil, SLP CAI. Please let me know. Please respond thanks!

This isn't a mod that's going to give you any noticable sotp gain. I didn't notice much after doing it but all the little mods like this will add up in the end. The gains I mentioned before were from www.projecttransam.com testing where they dynoed and picked up 5rwhp or so.

Its an alright mod, no real point. I did it by using some parts left over from the trans cooler install.

Ok, so everyone is doing this lovely mod and it doesnt do anything to a suggnificant gain. Well, I guess its one of those mods that the only way it makes a difference is if its all in your head! Its kinda like a ricer putting a racing decal on his car and now its a super fast car.!Lookout!
