Tapping bolt threads

I have to tap out the threads for the header bolts on my heads. When I go to the auto store do I just ask for a 3/8 16 thread tap?

are they bigger than stock bolts????

why do you need to tap???

If you are going bigger, you need a drill bit also. But if you're not then why do you need to tap?

One of the threads is messed up and I need to clean it out. I'm NOT looking to enlarge or drill it deeper.
