There's a little metal retainer in the front side of the shifter, right around the middle. Take it out with a flathead screwdriver or a knife and the **** will come off.

You can reuse it.

Taking off automatic console

If you want to get it over the parking brake, the rubber sleeve that it fits through is held by little clips on the inside, if you squeeze the sleeve inward towards the brake then they will come free from the clips and you should be able to slide the console over it then.

Pull the e-brake all the way up. There is just two bolts in the box on the back of the console and I think just one inside the cd holder.
