Tach goes to zero and moments later car dies

My friend's car is stalling on him.

His tach will go to 0 rpm and a few seconds later the car dies.

What is it?

Crankshaft position sensor?

being more serious:
going to need a little bit more info,
what model? what mods?
when does it stall, in traffic, cold, or when?

93 Z28 M6

Mods: CAI and exhaust.

After tach dies the car will rev but no power will transfer to the wheels.

Its intermittent.

You mean it's actually still running when the tach drops down? Does he have trouble cranking it after it dies?

You are going to have to provide more information if you want help troubleshooting the problem.

If this was a Taurus SHO I'd say it was a crank position sensor. They have the exact same symptoms when they go down.

I wonder if its the opti?

Sounds like the opti to me. The crank position sensor has no significant ignition related function on LT1s. The optispark provides the cam position for the computer. Only purpose the crank position sensor serves it to determine mis-fires and trip the check engine light.
