T56 tail housing bushing

I think my tail housing bushing is worn in my trans. I'm able to move the yoke of my driveshft up and down about 0.050 when it is installed in the trans. I looked at the exploded view of the T56 and it doesn't call out the bushing. Where can i get this bushing? Do I have to go to the dealer? How hard is it to change? If I use a slide hammer, do you think I could change it while the trans is in the car?
thanks,
Chris

That's a small amount of play. Are you getting alot of vibration?
You wiil probably only be able to get it from a dealer... or Maybe this web site will give you some information?
http://www.ttcautomotive.com

You will be able to replace it without pulling the trans. but you will have to pull the rear housing (Transmission)
Drain fluid,
pull the driveshaft,
remove rubber seal (Dust boot),
Drive old bushing out from the inside out (toward driveshaft end),
Be careful putting new one in (Recomend pressing it in) if not tap it in real easy. If you tap it too hard you will flatten it and the yoke will not go back in.
Also purchase a new seal, as you will probably damage the old one getting it out.

Good Luck if you decide to change it,
Michael

Thanks for the info mike. Yes, I'm getting vibration. I have changed to 4.10 gears in the rear and I believe the high speeds of the driveshaft are causing the vibration at speeds over 70 mph. Originally I had a steel driveshaft, but with that the vibration was tremendous. I switched to a used LS1 aluminum shaft and the vibration got better but its still there. The driveshaft has about 0.025" of runout on the trans side and about 0.010" on the rear side. Also on the trans side I can push the driveshaft up and down about 0.050". Anything else that would cause the problem? Unfortunately I've read many posts that have a driveline vibration mystery.

Yes, I know what you mean.
I've had similar vibration problems and thought the bushing may be the culprit. If you are getting any movment, I would replace it.
It's such a hassle for such a small part to replace.
Did you like the web site?

Good Luck,
Michael

I was able to get a new seal and bushing from a parts store for $9. Now I have to get under the car. The guy at the parts store thought that I might be able to get the old one out with a slide hammer and some bent metal stock.
If I opt to remove the tail housig I'm still going to have to lower the trans and remove the shifter, right? Then remove the bolts that hold the tail housing to the trans.

Did replacing the bushing remedy your vibration problem?
The website is excellent. Tons of useful information.

The website has great information about the Tremec T56. F-bodies use the BW T56. Is the Tremec info the same for the BW's?

Thanks,

Tod

From their website
TTC is a joint venture between DESC's automotive operation and Dana Corporation, traded under the NYSE symbol DCN. With the acquisition of TREMEC in 1994, the acquisition of Borg Warner's manual transmission operation in 1997, and the relocation of Dana's medium- and heavy-duty transmission operation in 1998, the Transmission Division became a full service Tier 1 transmission manufacturer.
so at least they are the source to ask about any T56. From other discussions on this board, very high horsepower people are putting in Viper tail housings to strengthen the output shaft so there are differerences.

My bushing was ok.
Vibration was from front pinion bearing.

Can you post the p/n for the bushing....... when I went to 4.10's I also picked up a slight Vibe , and I remember having some play @ the tail shaft ... but I went to a local tranny shop , and one of the tech's said there should be a little bit of play thanks in advance and let us know the end result
