switching to 95 timing cover... will my non-vented opti work?
switching to 95 timing cover... will my non-vented opti work?
I'm going to a 95+ timing cover so I can run a Cloyes timing set. I'd like to know if my 94 opti will work with that setup. Let me know what you know.
Jesse
FYI, already got a CSI pump.

From the "Rebuilding the LT1" article:
PHOTO OF 3 COVER DESIGNS
FRONT COVERS
The front covers have been changed three times, once because of the changes that were made to the distributor and once due to OBD II.
The original cover had three holes, one for the crank, a small hole (@ 0.70") for the water pump drive and a second one for the small drive shaft for the distributor. It’s a 10128289 casting.
The second front cover still had the small hole for the water pump shaft, but it had a much larger hole (@ 2.63") that sealed on the outside of the distributor housing itself. It’s a 10214196 casting.
The second cover was modified again in 1996 to accommodate the crank position sensor that was located in the lower corner of the cover on the passenger side. This same cover was used for the few engines that were installed in 1997, too. It’s a 12550032 casting.

Jesse,
In addition to what's already been stated, you will have to change the dowel pin in the cam to drive the Opti... and possibly drill out the front of the cam to allow the 95+ Opti shaft to fit. Some have gotten lucky, but most have to remove the cam to get the dowel pin out. And don't even attempt to drill out the cam while it's installed.
Bawls,
The issue is not the timing cover, it is that the 93-94 Optis were spline driven... and neither the Cloyes nor any other timing set except the stock 93-94 set is splined for the Opti.

Everyone looking for an opti- I bought a vented unit, new, from ebay for $83, $130 rush delivered. I have a decent amount of aftermarket mods, including ignition and coil, and i have had 0 issues with my cheap optispark. I GOT IT ON EEEEEEE-BAYYYYY
junk on eBay and ended up having to replace them.
