surging with stall converter
surging with stall converter
I just got a TCI 3K stall converter and B&M cooler. Now after the car is warmed up it will surge at idle when in gear. The surge only happens when in gear. ie the car is at full operating temp and I pull into a fast food drive through it will surge up and down slowly (almost like loping) between 600rpm and 900rpm. When I put the car in park or neutral the surging stops and idles normally. on a scan while surging it shows 0counts on the idle control (IAC I think it is called). Other than that under any kind of acceleration it is smooth.
Is this something that requires a tune to fix? What in the tune will fix this?

Re: surging with stall converter
i have almost the same problem. in park or neutral, idle is fine. when im at a red light or at a drive thru, the idle is jumpy. its not quite at bad as yours, but bad enough to make me worry sometimes. sometimes it drops to just above 500 and then back up to around 700. i have a stock tach, so those numbers could be off either way. i just had a new tranny put in 2 days ago, and its not quite as bad. you have any ideas of what it could be? maybe fuel related (ie pump/fpr)? could it be a dirty maf maybe? i have no clue, just some ideas.
Re: surging with stall converter
I used to have the same problem (although my stall is smaller), but only when switching to reverse. A bit more timing in the range it was seeing on the scanner helped the issue, but looking at your tune, you shouldn't have that problem unless it's caused by something else. It may be a long shot, but I would try removing the bottom plate off the TB and cleaning the IAC valve real well with some carb cleaner. See if that helps any.
Oh yea, put some 3.73s in that thing and watch your MPH increase.

Re: surging with stall converter
hey madwolf, i sent u a PM about possibly tuning out my surging =) I replaced the IAC and TPS sensor and neither helped at all.

Re: surging with stall converter
same problem here guys. 2800 tci stall. on stock tach, drops from 900 to 500, then will keep getting higher and higher till it sometimes hits 1700. only way i have stopped it, was to hit the gas and hold it for a sec! why would this be stall related though?

Re: surging with stall converter
well i do believe it is stall related. i just dont understand why! are the fluids in the converter spinning to much when the car is at idle? and making the motor spin? that dont make any sense, but i dunno
Re: surging with stall converter
1700 is a little high, it may be your TPS sensor. The highest mine will surge to is 900. Once I give a little pressure on the gas and get it above 900 car runs like a champ.
