Super charger set up. Good idea or nah?
Super charger set up. Good idea or nah?
I was wanting a supercharger on my 94 but then read on here that someone said they are ticking time bombs. What causes that? do they make TOO much compression that the engine eventually cracks under it? I was also thinking, since the stock compression is at 10.5:1 why don't i just get some bigger heads to knock the compression down a tad to like 9.0:1 then put the charger on there. Would that work and still get a good amount of power gain or would it just be a trade off and lose compression/power, then add compression/gain power?
Re: Super charger set up. Good idea or nah?
From the people I have known in the past that have blown their engines with s chargers, they usually melt piston 7 or 8. JUst from the couple eople I have known in the past.

That says enough to me... I wouldn't put a blower on a motor with that many miles.

Dropping the compression helps, but it still doesn't really fix the problem of the motor having cast pistons in it. Cast pistons with 178,000 miles on them doesn't help the cause much either. If you want to install a blower, then do it, but just be ready for the day when it goes boom. May be the same day you install the blower, it may last another 50k miles.
Re: Super charger set up. Good idea or nah?
I plan on saving up the money over the winter (since that's when i won't drive it) and take it apart then, then rebuild it with new fel-pro gaskets, new pistons hopefully if i get the money (for better compression), and if i REALLY have enough money, port my heads/intake/tb. Is there anything else i should upgrade/rebuild? would new rockers and lifters be a good idea?
Re: Super charger set up. Good idea or nah?
ok, so i should upgrade all this rght?...
-gaskets
-bearings
-lifters
-rockers
-pushrods
-pistons
-port (if i have the money)
EDIT: also, does anyone know what the heads are on 94 camaros stock? i was looking at some pistons that create 11:1 compression with 74cc heads, but that doesn't sound right, help please!

Re: Super charger set up. Good idea or nah?
That's the thing, i want to gain as much power as possible without losing gas mileage, this is my daily driven car and i already get 12 miles to the gallon
And for the crankshaft, is it a 3.48 balance/what ever you call it? or is that something i could upgrade to gain power without losing mileage? If you guys could make a list for me of everything i can upgrade to get power without losing gas i would greatly appreciate it.

The combustion chambers on your LT-1 are 54CC's.Your piston's are hyper-u-craptit.

And here's the pistons i was looking at, it would raise the stock compression of 10.5:1 to 11.6:1 Is that too much? Item number 648-H3418.STD (first one) on Jegs
Or even these here
